- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Belurat Scadutree Fragment Locations
The Scadutree Blessing level is a feature of the Shadow Realm Blessing, a new mechanic for enhancing your character's power. Unlike leveling up with runes, each Scadutree Blessing typically boosts your attack and defense by about 5%, with your attributes displayed in gold while you're in the Shadow Realm. Since each blessing level provides a significant upgrade, the effects are more noticeable compared to allocating stat points through rune-based leveling. It’s highly advisable to increase your Shadow Realm Blessing, especially when facing tough challenges. Belurat, Tower Settlement Locations West Belurat Room Fragment This Scadutree Fragment is located inside Belurat, Tower Settlement, the first Legacy Dungeon in the DLC. After making some progress from the Small Private Altar Site of Grace, head west until you reach a fork in the path. To the right, you’ll find a rooftop path that allows you to continue, while to the left are some ruins, along with a lift that takes you back down to the first Site of Grace, near a room filled with giant spider-scorpions. You can actually jump over the broken ruins next to the spider-scorpion door, which will lead you to the entrance of another room. This chamber is filled with cursed Man-Flies, one of which is praying over a dead counterpart. Once you've dealt with them, proceed along the only available path, and you’ll find a Cross of Miquella nearby, with the Scadutree Fragment located close to it.
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Castle Ensis Scadutree Fragment Locations
Castle Ensis Locations Castle Ensis Fragment This Scadutree Fragment can be found within Castle Ensis, a "minor" legacy dungeon that features a Remembrance Boss and restricts access to the Scadu Altus region. You can find this Scadutree Fragment by battling your way through the castle until you reach the Castle Ensis Checkpoint Site of Grace. The fragment is located by a Cross of Miquella, near a large gate.
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Scadu Altus Scadutree Fragment Locations
Scadu Altus Locations Highroad Cross Site of Grace Fragment After passing through Castle Ensis and defeating Rellana, you'll arrive at Scadu Altus. Near the first Site of Grace, Highroad Cross, you’ll find the new Scadutree Fragment situated alongside a new Cross of Miquella and two NPCs: Needle Knight Leda and the Hornsent. Church of the Crusade Fragment x2 Similar to the Church of Consolation in Gravesite Plain, this church also contains 2 Scadutree Fragments on its altar. It is situated on a large hill to the north of the Highroad Cross. Unlike the previous church, you will be confronted by a powerful enemy as you approach: Fire Knight Queelign, whom you may have already encountered in Belurat. He wields a fiery spear and devastating incantations, dealing significant damage. If he proves to be too challenging, you might need to sprint past him to grab the fragments before making your escape. Northern Messmer Camp Fragment In Scadu Altus, there are several outposts populated by Soldiers of Messmer and dangerous Black Knights. One of these outposts contains a Scadutree Fragment located at the foot of a statue of Marika, situated above the road that runs through the camp, near a small cobblestone wall. You can find this camp by following the main road north toward Shadow Keep from the Highroad Cross. However, it’s best to rush in and grab the fragment quickly, as a nearby Furnace Golem to the north will begin marching toward you, threatening to demolish the entire campsite! Southern Messmer Camp Fragment Another outpost filled with Messmer's Soldiers is located down the hill from the Highroad Cross, along the main road south leading to Moorth Ruins, directly across from the campsite. Here, you’ll find another statue of Marika with a Scadutree Fragment at its base, which is guarded by a group of Messmer's Soldiers. Moorth Ruins Cross Fragment Directly across the road from the Southern Messmer Camp lies the large Moorth Ruins, partially buried by a crater. Within this area, you'll find one of Miquella's Crosses, accompanied by a silent but friendly monk named Dryleaf Dane. The Scadutree Fragment is located at the base of the cross on the northern side of the ruins. Shadow Jar Moorth Ruins Fragment A second Scadutree Fragment can be found elsewhere in the Moorth Ruins, separate from the one located at the Cross of Miquella, but it is well hidden. Head to the southeastern edge of the large sinkhole where half the town has collapsed. Near the cliffs at the edge of the pit, you’ll spot a lone Shadow Undead holding a sparkling jar. Defeat him to obtain the Scadutree Fragment, but be cautious, as a Curseblade Ascetic is lurking just out of sight, ready to ambush you. Cave Fragment From the Highroad Cross Site of Grace, head northeast until you come across a small lake. If you open your map, you'll see it as a pool of water situated directly below another pool of water. This area is surrounded by several blue worm creatures. Ignore the worms and search for an entrance to a cave on the northern side. At the cave's entrance, you'll find a large statue of Marika that holds the Scadutree Fragment. Scaduview Cross Fragment At the southern edge of Scadu Altus, you’ll encounter a Ghostflame Dragon battling a group of soldiers. If you head east from this area toward the eastern cliffs, you’ll discover a sealed Spiritspring and a stone cairn just around the corner of the cliff, which is guarded by Vampire Bats. Unseal the Spiritspring and use it to leap onto a plateau to the south. Follow the path toward the southern tip, passing several Gravebirds, until you reach a vantage point overlooking the Fort of Reprimand. At the edge, you’ll find a Cross of Miquella that overlooks the Jagged Peak far to the south, along with a Scadutree Fragment at its base. Recluses' River Upstream Fragment While in the Shadow Keep, you can take an alternate hidden path to exit the keep to a lower part of the Scadu Altus region. To do this, return to the Main Gate and approach the drawbridge leading to the Specimen Storehouse. Instead of crossing the bridge, look to the right, where a Fire Knight is guarding a ladder along the ledge that descends into the inner moat. Follow the path beneath the moat to discover a hidden room containing a collectible painting. Strike the wall to the right to reveal an illusory wall, which will lead you to a stone coffin you can enter to descend into the Castle Basin below the Shadow Keep. Head south through this basin to reach a new Site of Grace at the top of the Recluses' River. We hope you enjoy jumping, as the path to this fragment is quite challenging. From the Recluses' River Upstream Site of Grace, make your way to the point where the nearby waterfall ends. To get there, follow the path south. As you need to jump to the right side (be cautious of the pesky Fly-Men trying to ambush you), turn right and head to the edge of the area. Below, you'll notice some small rocks shaped like peaks, with one rising higher than the others. Summon Torrent, hold your breath, and leap onto that rock. Remember that you can execute a delayed second jump with your horse while in mid-air. Use this ability at the last moment to adjust your trajectory! If you land on the platform successfully, the rest will be easy. Carefully descend from that rock, then head toward the waterfall, passing by some Mirandas. The fragment will be inside a coffin. Recluses' River Upstream Hippopotamus Fragment x2 From the Recluses' River Downstream Site of Grace (after passing the initial group of Fly-Men), look to your left to find a large stone grave embedded in the wall. Descend from there to reach a small wetland area to the east of the main river and its waterfalls. In the watering hole, you’ll encounter two Hippopotamus enemies. Unlike the one guarding the Shadow Keep, these do not possess any golden abilities, but they are still formidable. Fortunately, they patrol separate areas, allowing you to engage them individually. You can also summon spirit ashes if needed. Each Hippopotamus drops one Scadutree Fragment, giving you a total of two fragments.
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Shadow Keep Scadutree Fragment Locations
Shadow Keep Locations Main Gate Plaza Site of Grace Fragment x2 The next few Scadutree Fragments are located inside the Shadow Keep, the second Legacy Dungeon at the northern end of Scadu Altus. While there are multiple entrances, it's best to start by entering through the Main Gate. You’ll obtain this Scadutree Fragment after defeating the Golden Hippopotamus boss at the entrance of the Shadow Keep. This battle also unlocks the first Site of Grace in the Legacy Dungeon, known as Main Gate Plaza. Storehouse, Fourth Floor Site of Grace Fragment After passing through the Main Gate of the Shadow Keep, proceed across a drawbridge guarded by a Fire Knight to access a lift that will take you up to the storehouse area of the keep. Once you arrive at the Specimen Storehouse, you'll find a vast library that seems to stretch endlessly. While there’s a path to the left leading to the Rauh Ruins, you should start ascending the storage tower if you want to locate more Scadutree Fragments in this area. Make your way to the back of the storage room, where you'll find stairs leading up to higher levels. Once you reach the third floor, navigate along a balcony guarded by Vulgar Militia. Look to your right for a large hanging humanoid specimen; you can jump onto its feet and run up to its head, which will allow you to leap onto the fourth floor's balcony. On the fourth floor, you'll discover a new Site of Grace, a Cross of Miquella, and the Scadutree Fragment you seek. Storehouse, Seventh Floor Fragment The last main floor you'll access in the Storehouse through this route is the seventh one. To reach it, continue upward until you arrive at a room containing a lever that allows you to adjust the position of the hanging specimens, enabling you to climb the center pillar. Once you reach the seventh floor, you can exit outside for the final section and cross a bridge that connects to the last large room of the storehouse. You’ll need to defeat a powerful Messmer knight, but once you do, you can open the door in front of you to receive a Scadutree Fragment as a reward. Afterward, head up the stairs to confront Messmer the Impaler. Church District Fragment Although this fragment is located in the Shadow Keep, you cannot access it from the main entrance. Instead, you need to navigate to the eastern side of the region, known as the Church District, which can be reached by descending from Moorth Ruins. Upon entering the Church District, you'll find the entire area flooded, requiring you to jump from roof to roof. Be cautious, as a single misstep can land you in the water, resulting in an instant "You Died" screen. Although it may seem unorthodox, the path is relatively straightforward. At one point, you'll need to turn left, confront a Messmer knight, and then jump onto some platforms to your left. Ascend to the top of this roof and descend carefully, taking note of where to fall. Once you reach the ground level of this area, move forward and face two more Messmer enemies along the way. You'll find a small room on your right. Inside this room, you'll find a statue holding an item in its hand, which is, as you guessed, the Scadutree Fragment. The jump to reach it is a bit tricky since you don’t need to run for it, and you only have one chance. However, as long as you jump close to the statue and are prepared to press the button to pick up the Scadutree Fragment, you’ll be fine. Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace Fragment Reaching this Site of Grace isn't straightforward. You'll need to navigate to Scaduview North, which requires some unconventional routes. The quickest way to get there is to start from the room with the statue where you obtained the previous Scadutree Fragment in the Church District. In this hallway, if you take the first left, you'll discover the device that cleans the water in the area. However, if you take the second left (just before the spawn point of the second Messmer knight), you'll find a bridge leading to a lift. Continue along the path, and you’ll re-enter the Specimen Storehouse from a different side. Move forward until you spot a hole in one of the rooms on your left. Keep following the route, which will require you to ascend to the top of the area by using multiple elevators, and you'll eventually reach the Site of Grace. The statue with the fragment is located in a room on your right. Scadutree Chalice Fragment x5 From the Back Gate Site of Grace in the Shadow Keep, proceed forward and step outside to enter Scaduview North. Here, you'll encounter Commander Gaius. Once you defeat the commander, summon Torrent and head left through the only available path. You’ll enter a vast expanse of land that appears mostly empty, except for a cabin on your left. At the northern end of the area, marked on the map as a large rectangle, you'll find the Scadutree Chalice. This chalice is exactly what you’re looking for, as there are five Scadutree Fragments surrounding it!

Along the way, you'll encounter a Ghostflame Dragon and discover a Map Fragment. When you reach a cliff on your left, you'll spot a Miquella's Cross. Nearby, you’ll also find a new Site of Grace along with the Scadutree Fragment. Cerulean Coast Cave Fragment From the Site of Grace at Cerulean Coast West, head northeast until you find an opening that allows you to explore the northern part of the Cerulean Coast. In this area, you'll encounter a lake surrounded by various enemies, including a mini-boss. Once the path opens up, make sure to turn left. As you progress along the path, you'll come across a cave on your right. Inside, you'll encounter a Demi-Human. Defeating it will allow you to collect a fragment as well.

You'll encounter birds and various enemies along the way, but you can ignore them for now. At one point, you'll notice a Miranda flower on your left. Skip past it and take the path on your right to go upward. Once you reach the top, you'll encounter a Hippopotamus, which will drop one fragment upon defeat.

- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Ancients Ruins of Rauh Scadutree Fragment Locations
Ancients Ruins of Rauh Locations Rauh Ancient Ruins, East Site of Grace As you enter the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, accessible only from the west exit of Shadow Keep, take some time to explore until you reach the first Site of Grace called Rauh Ancient Ruins, East. You’ll find one of the first Scadutree Fragments of the region here. Rauh Ancient Ruins Hippopotamus At the start of the area (not at the East Site of Grace, but at the entrance from Shadow Keep), turn left and take the large lift you’ll find in the open. You’ll descend into some ruins. Follow the path until you come across a small hole on your left. Head through it and continue straight ahead. You’ll find a Hippopotamus in this area, which will drop one Scadutree Fragment upon defeat. This variant doesn't have all the moves of the Golden one, so you can also summon Torrent or a Spirit Ash for assistance if needed. Rauh Ancient Ruins, East Ruins This fragment can be one of the most challenging to find when exploring Rauh for the first time, so let’s break it down. Begin at the East Site of Grace. From there, turn right and ride your horse through the entrance of the ruins, which is likely how you arrived at this Site of Grace in the first place. Continue forward and turn right when necessary. You can choose to either bypass or confront the Fly-Men in the area. Shortly after, you'll encounter a fork; turn right again. In the next room, you’ll spot a Spiritspring—ignore it for now. Keep moving ahead until you find a second Spiritspring, and use it. You’ll land right in front of a Shadow Undead holding a sparkling jar. Defeat him swiftly, and you’ll claim the fragment. Rauh Ancient Ruins, West Fragment From the East Site of Grace, leap onto the bridges to your right, bypassing the Furnace Golem, and take a left when possible. This will lead you to the Rauh Ancient Ruins, West Site of Grace. Begin by summoning Torrent and heading toward the ruins in front of the Site of Grace. You'll encounter a set of stairs guarded by a few enemies; be especially cautious of those hurling bouncing fire projectiles. You can choose to engage them or bypass the fight altogether. Once you reach the top, take a right turn. In this large room, head straight toward the altar-like structure in the center, where you'll find two Shadow Undead nearby. You can collect the fragment located there. Base Rauh Fragment Although this area shares the name with the Rauh Ruins, it isn't accessible from the same location. To reach it, you must travel through the lake situated north of the Moorth Ruins (the one surrounded by blue worms). This path will take you to a cave containing another Scadutree Fragment. Follow the cave's route, and you'll eventually arrive at Rauh Base, which leads to a Map Fragment located in front of the Temple Town Ruins. The Fragment is found within the Temple Town Ruins, but the walled area appears to be impenetrable at first. Fortunately, if you carefully inspect the southern wall, you'll discover a small opening that allows you to enter. Simply take the stairs, climb onto the roof, then descend onto the platform ahead. From there, jump to the balcony where a corpse is located. You'll find the fragment there.

- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – All Enir-Ilim Scadutree Fragment Locations
Enir-Ilim Locations Enir-Ilim Spiral Rise Cross Fragment Fortunately, this Scadutree Fragment is located along the main path of the Legacy Dungeon early in the area, but you'll need to battle your way through to reach it. From the First Rise Site of Grace, head southwest to a large plaza filled with Inquisitors and ascend to the higher level. Move west toward a large staircase guarded by a lightning-infused Divine Beast Warrior. Once you reach the stairs, rush up to defeat an enemy that is continuously casting damaging spells on the ground, and then take out a second enemy guarding the door. After opening the door to the Spiral Rise, you'll discover Miquella's final Cross along with the Scadutree Fragment. Enir-Ilim Path to Belurat Fragment You can technically locate this Scadutree Fragment back in Belurat, but its position is only reachable from Enir-Ilim, making it quite a challenge due to the complicated platforming involved! At the large staircase leading to the Spiral Rise Site of Grace, pause after defeating the first enemy who is continuously casting incantations. Look for a ledge below you, or find the stairs to the side. From the broken ledge, look further down to spot another large staircase, but you'll need to make a significant leap to reach it. Once you’ve jumped down, head up the stairs and pass through the circular room to look out over a broken balcony. Pay close attention below, and you should see some archways protruding from the building, along with several corpses that have items gleaming to guide you. Jump toward the wall to safely land on the ledge, and then navigate the archways to the south. When you reach the end of the arches, carefully maneuver around the corner to see a nearby tower to the south, adorned with jutting gargoyles. Leap down to land on the lower ledge. From this position, look southeast to spot broken stairs leading to a large courtyard featuring a statue—that's your ultimate destination. Drop down to the stairs and proceed to the landing where the path splits. The only way forward from here is to make a daring leap south into a window (ensure you don’t bounce off), and then hop down to re-enter Belurat. Exit the altar room and turn left to find a large statue draped in cloth. At the foot of this statue lies the Scadutree Fragment you’re looking for (but be cautious, as a large Spider Scorpion may ambush you!). Enir-Ilim Tower Altar Fragment Ascend the Spiral Rise until you can jump out of a window onto the rooftops. Fight your way past several Gravebirds, and eventually, you'll discover a staircase that leads up through a small room to a higher set of rooftops. As soon as you reach the top rooftops, turn around to find a small altar room that contains the Scadutree Fragment. However, don't get too comfortable, as a frost-infused Divine Beast Warrior will soon be approaching! Enir-Ilim Cleansing Chamber Anteroom Fragment To reach it, ascend from the Spiral Rise, navigate across the rooftops, and climb the final flight of stairs to confront the most challenging storm-infused Divine Beast Warrior. Fortunately, you can use a Spirit Summon to assist you in this battle! After defeating him, you'll enter the Cleansing Chamber Anteroom, which features a Site of Grace and the final Scadutree Fragment.

The fragments are guarded by a Black Knight, who also drops a Black Steel Greathammer upon defeat. Shadow Jar Scorched Ruins Fragment Occasionally, you'll encounter basic enemies known as Shadow Undead holding jars above their heads. Defeating one carrying a sparkling jar often rewards you with something valuable, sometimes even a Scadutree Fragment. However, once they notice you, they will attempt to flee and disappear, similar to how a Scarab Beetle behaves. One of the earliest Shadow Undead carrying a jar can be found in the cemetery northeast of the Scorched Ruins, directly east of its Site of Grace. This particular enemy is surrounded by other Shadow Undead and several dogs, so be cautious to avoid getting ambushed while approaching. Starting from the initial Site of Grace, head north until you reach the main road. From there, turn west and continue past the Furnace Golem. Main Gate Cross Site of Grace Fragment Occasionally, you'll encounter basic enemies known as Shadow Undead holding jars above their heads. Defeating one with a sparkling jar often yields something valuable, including the possibility of a Scadutree Fragment. However, once they notice you, they will attempt to flee and disappear, much like a Scarab Beetle. One of the earliest Shadow Undead carrying a jar can be found in the cemetery northeast of the Scorched Ruins, directly east of its Site of Grace. This particular enemy is accompanied by other Shadow Undead and several dogs, so be cautious of potential ambushes when approaching. Shadow Jar Prospect Town Fragment Another Shadow Undead carrying a sparkling jar can be found in the Gravesite Plain. Upon defeat, it will drop a Scadutree Fragment. However, this enemy is located outside a town that can be challenging to reach. From the Main Gate Cross outside Belurat, look south to find a cliffside path that leads up to a plateau known as Prospect Town. Open your map and locate a forested area to the west of the ruins. In this area, you'll discover a small cemetery where you can find the Shadow Undead holding a jar. Be cautious, as there are Bloodfiends along the road, as well as additional Shadow Undead and dogs lurking among the graves. Castle Front Site of Grace Fragment The next Fragments are all located in the eastern half of the Gravesite Plain. Starting from the Site of Grace at Three-Path Cross, head northeast toward the Ellac Greatbridge. You’ll come across an enemy camp teeming with Messmer's soldiers, so it’s easy to spot. Just a few steps before reaching the next Site of Grace, Castle Front, and in front of Castle Ensis, you’ll find the Scadutree Fragment to your right. It’s located slightly off the main road, near some tents at the base of a statue of Marika. Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace Fragment Another Scadutree Fragment can be found at one of Miquella's Crosses in the southeastern part of Gravesite Plain. This fragment is located near the Pillar Path Cross, which is at the end of a path south of Castle Ensis. To reach it, take the sloping path upward through the graveyard, then make a slight left off the main road, where you'll find Thiollier, one of Miquella's followers, resting. Cerulean Coast Locations Cerulean Coast Cross Site of Grace Fragment From the initial Site of Grace in the area, ride Torrent in a straight line towards the southeast side of the region. Charo's Hidden Grave Locations Charo's Hidden Grave Hippopotamus Fragment Charo's Hidden Grave has just one Site of Grace. From there, ride your horse to the west, following the left path. Stone Coffin Fissure Locations Fissure Cross Fragment The fragment is located next to the Cross and the second Site of Grace in the area, known as Fissure Cross. You’ll reach this spot as you continue your straightforward progression through the Stone Coffin Fissure. Abyssal Woods Locations Abandoned Church Fragment x2 When you enter the Abyssal Woods, head straight ahead, and you'll come across the Abandoned Church shortly after passing the area's Map Fragment. Inside the church, you'll find two Fragments. Northern Abyssal Woods Fragment You can find this Scadutree Fragment near the northern central area of the Abyssal Woods, and luckily, you won't have to navigate past any of the unsettling Winter Lanterns to reach it. Starting from the Woodland Trail Site of Grace near the entrance of the woods, go directly east, following the shallow river until you reach the main Abyssal Woods Site of Grace. When you notice one of the first Winter Lanterns in a foggy valley below, head north toward the cliff walls instead. There, you'll encounter several Inquisitor enemies. After defeating them, look to the east to find a body slumped against a tree, where the fragment is located. Jagged Peak Locations Jagged Peak Fragment When you reach Jagged Peak (not the initial entrance after the bridge, but the actual peak following the dual dragon battle), you'll begin ascending the area. At a certain point, you'll encounter large boulders rolling toward you.
- Resident Evil Retrospective – Part 5: Leon vs. Las Plagas
In 2001, Capcom announced what would become one of the most pivotal entries in video game history: Resident Evil 4 . As part of an exclusivity deal with Nintendo, Resident Evil 4 was initially planned to be part of the “Capcom 5,” a collection of five titles intended to boost the GameCube's popularity. Alongside P.N.03 , Killer7 , Dead Phoenix , and Viewtiful Joe , Resident Evil 4 promised to take the series in a bold new direction. A remake of the original Resident Evil and a prequel, Resident Evil 0 , were also on the horizon. However, the journey to release would prove to be anything but straightforward. A New Direction for Leon S. Kennedy Before it became the masterpiece we know today, Resident Evil 4 underwent several iterations. The only element Capcom was certain of from the start was that the protagonist would be Leon Kennedy, the familiar Resident Evil 2 hero. However, this wouldn’t be the Leon fans knew. Instead of the skinny redhead from Raccoon City, Leon would evolve into a more rugged, muscular figure. The story’s setting also shifted, leaving behind the familiar urban environments of previous games for a mysterious European locale. The game's first appearance at the 2002 Tokyo Game Show gave players a glimpse of this new direction. Leon was shown battling supernatural enemies in ominous locations like a haunted mansion and a lightning-swept airship. Capcom hinted at Leon becoming infected by an early form of the T-virus, while a menacing foe wielding giant scissors stalked him. Despite the eerie atmosphere, this version was soon scrapped as the developers decided it wasn’t the right fit for the series. The second attempt debuted at E3 2003, where the game shifted toward paranormal horror. Leon found himself taunted by haunting dolls and shadowy figures, with the centerpiece enemy being an invulnerable phantom swinging a chain and hook. Although this iteration introduced the now-iconic over-the-shoulder camera and laser-guided gunplay, it too was abandoned. Capcom’s Shinji Mikami, the driving force behind the series, realized the paranormal elements didn’t suit the franchise's core themes and pushed to take the game in yet another direction. Reimagining Survival Horror Determined to create something fresh while staying true to the series’ identity, Mikami wanted Resident Evil 4 to stand apart from the classic zombie formula. Drawing on his experience directing P.N.03 and producing Viewtiful Joe , Mikami reinvented the game with a focus on faster, more aggressive enemies. Gone were the slow-moving Romero-style zombies; in their place were the frighteningly intelligent and violent villagers of rural Spain, known as Los Ganados. When Resident Evil 4 finally launched on January 11, 2005, for the GameCube, it took the series in a groundbreaking new direction. Set six years after the events of Resident Evil 2 , the game follows Leon, now a U.S. Secret Service agent, on a mission to rescue the kidnapped daughter of the U.S. President, Ashley Graham. His mission leads him to a secluded village in Spain, where a sinister cult, Los Illuminados, is using a parasitic organism known as Las Plagas to control the local populace. For the first time in the series, Umbrella Corporation—the malevolent pharmaceutical company that had been central to the plot—was largely absent. The focus was now on a new biological threat, making Leon’s journey feel fresh while maintaining the tension and horror the series was known for. Revolutionary Gameplay Changes Resident Evil 4 introduced several gameplay innovations that forever changed the survival horror genre. Most notably, the shift to a fully 3D, over-the-shoulder perspective brought players closer to the action. This new viewpoint, combined with laser-guided targeting, gave players more control over combat than ever before. Leon’s enemies, the Ganados, were a far cry from the mindless zombies of previous games. They could work together, dodge bullets, and use weapons—forcing players to adapt to a faster, more strategic style of gameplay. The game’s structure was also significantly altered. Gone were the static, pre-rendered backgrounds and restrictive item slots of earlier titles. Players could now freely explore vast environments and organize their inventory within an upgradable attaché case. Items could be sold to a mysterious traveling merchant, who quickly became one of the series' most memorable characters with his iconic line: “Got a selection of good things on sale, stranger!” Another significant departure was the removal of the ink ribbon system, which had limited saves in earlier games. Instead, players could save their progress at typewriters without needing an item, reducing the frustration of limited saves and allowing for a more streamlined experience. The Evolution of Horror As Leon's mission unfolded, he faced increasingly dangerous foes. From the aggressive Ganados to monstrous creations like the El Gigante and the parasitic Regenerators, the enemies in Resident Evil 4 were as diverse as they were terrifying. The game also introduced Quick Time Events (QTEs), which added a new layer of interactivity to cinematic moments. These button-pressing sequences kept players engaged during intense cutscenes, ensuring that even watching the action felt dynamic. While Resident Evil 4 moved away from traditional survival horror in many ways, replacing puzzles with more action-oriented gameplay and increasing the availability of ammunition, it still retained an atmosphere of dread and tension. The line between hero and villain blurred as Leon discovered that the Ganados were victims, controlled by the Las Plagas parasite. This added a tragic dimension to the relentless violence Leon was forced to inflict on the villagers. Legacy and Impact Resident Evil 4 was a monumental success, both critically and commercially. It won over 20 Game of the Year awards, sold millions of copies, and was hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time. Its influence extended far beyond the Resident Evil series, reshaping the survival horror genre and inspiring numerous other games to adopt its innovative mechanics. However, not all fans embraced the changes. Some long-time players lamented the loss of the traditional slow-burn horror and puzzles that had defined the earlier games. The focus on action and shooting over suspenseful exploration led some to criticize the game for abandoning the core principles of the series. Still, Resident Evil 4 represented a bold evolution, and its legacy as a revolutionary entry in the franchise is undeniable. A New Era for Resident Evil Following the release of Resident Evil 4 , the franchise would continue to evolve in new and unexpected ways. The game was eventually ported to multiple platforms, including the PlayStation 2, PC, and Wii, each version bringing new features and costumes for Leon and Ashley. The success of Resident Evil 4 also helped pave the way for new Resident Evil films and animated features, further expanding the series’ reach into mainstream pop culture. Despite the growing pains the series experienced in the 2000s, Resident Evil 4 remains a defining moment in video game history. It showcased Capcom’s willingness to take risks and reinvent a beloved franchise, proving that even the most iconic series can evolve while staying true to its roots. Whether fans embraced the action-heavy direction or longed for the more traditional survival horror experience, Resident Evil 4 set the stage for the future of the series—and the survival horror genre itself. In the next chapter of this retrospective, we’ll dive deeper into the mysteries of Resident Evil , exploring Umbrella’s dark history and the forces that continue to shape the series' ever-expanding universe.
