  • Until Dawn – PC Review

Until Dawn stands as a cinematic adventure that boldly experiments with the narrative gaming landscape. Supermassive Games' breakout title asks not just how to tell a video game story, but what kind of stories can be told. From its outset, the game strikes a balance between timed button prompts and full control, crafting a foundation upon which it explores various tones, themes, and genres with mixed success. The game kicks off as a B-movie teen slasher flick, complete with cliché archetypes and a secluded mountain lodge setting. Despite these familiar elements, Until Dawn manages to draw players into the terror, making them feel complicit in the chaos. However, the game doesn't stop there. It swiftly transitions between teen horror, action movie, and psychological drama, keeping players on the edge of their seats. While these shifts maintain the game's pacing, they occasionally deflate the tension, leaving some moments feeling muddled in identity crisis. Throughout its 10-hour adventure, Until Dawn maintains a consistent balance between open exploration and quick-time events (QTEs). The controls, featuring both standard and motion options, ensure players remain engaged. Despite a few predictable moments, the game's seemingly insignificant choices drastically impact the characters' fates. This willingness to embrace player agency, even at the cost of characters' lives, sets Until Dawn apart, offering a refreshing departure from prescribed outcomes found in other games. Exploration in Until Dawn yields collectibles such as totems and clues, adding depth to the story. While some collectibles lack impact due to explicit story revelations, the game's captivating cast compensates. The mo-cap work delivers photorealistic facial expressions, immersing players in the characters' emotions. Although not every aspect of the game is flawless, the synergy between acting, tension, atmosphere, and gameplay results in a captivating experience. Until Dawn's experimentation with choices and their meaningful consequences elevates it among the best in its genre, offering an unpredictable and engaging adventure. Despite its occasional missteps, Until Dawn remains a thrilling journey through horror, action, and psychological intrigue. Until Dawn proves to be an unexpected delight, especially for enthusiasts of interactive narratives. While it excels as a schlocky horror experience, it transcends the typical slasher genre with its intricate storyline, maintaining a deliberately silly tone throughout. Although occasional control issues and imperfect performance capture might cause minor frustrations, they don't overshadow the engaging popcorn flick plot. The game's standout feature, the butterfly effect, adds depth to the experience, creating a captivating narrative web. In essence, Until Dawn delivers on its promise of a ridiculous romp, providing hours of entertainment that will keep players engaged throughout the night. Final Score:

  • Life is Strange: True Colors – Switch Review

Life is Strange: True Colors invites players to step into the shoes of Alex Chen, a young woman with a turbulent past and a unique ability – she can sense and absorb other people's emotions. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Haven Springs in Colorado, Alex embarks on a journey filled with mystery and self-discovery after her brother Gabe's invitation reveals the town's hidden secrets, including a suspicious death that demands her investigation. From the moment you meet Alex, her relatable and authentic personality shines through, making her a standout protagonist in the Life Is Strange series. Unlike some of her predecessors, Alex feels like a genuine, multidimensional character, making it easy to empathize with her struggles and victories. True Colors cleverly weaves a narrative that, while somewhat predictable at times, remains engaging thanks to its strong character development and intriguing subplots. Alex's empathic abilities add a refreshing twist to the gameplay, allowing players to explore the depths of other characters' emotions. Although this power feels more passive compared to previous games' mechanics, it enhances the dialogue and narrative experience, leading to meaningful choices and consequences. The game strikes a delicate balance between linearity and player agency, prompting players to ponder their decisions in morally ambiguous situations, fostering a genuine sense of emotional investment. Beyond the main story, True Colors offers players a semi-open world experience in Haven Springs, encouraging exploration and interaction with the town's residents. While not as expansive as games like Assassin's Creed, this newfound freedom adds depth to the world-building, making Haven Springs feel vibrant and believable. Engaging with the townspeople, solving their problems, and immersing oneself in the community enhances the overall experience, although a more robust quest tracker would have been a welcome addition. Structurally, True Colors follows the familiar format of previous games, divided into five chapters, each offering a distinct segment of the story. The game's length and scope are on par with its predecessors, and the multiple endings are a result of your choices rather than binary decisions, enhancing the replayability factor. Where True Colors truly excels is in its production values. The game boasts remarkable cinematography, enhanced visuals, and smoother animations, showcasing a noticeable improvement over its predecessors. The musical score, composed by Angus & Julia Stone, captures the signature Life is Strange vibe with its folksy and indie sound, perfectly complementing the game's emotional moments. Additionally, the voice acting is top-notch, ensuring a consistently immersive experience. In summary, Life is Strange: True Colors successfully builds upon the series' foundations while introducing innovative gameplay elements and a compelling protagonist. Despite its predictable plot, the game's strong character development, moral complexity, and immersive world make it a standout entry in the franchise. Deck Nine's attention to detail, both visually and musically, elevates the overall experience, making True Colors a must-play for fans and newcomers alike. Final Score:

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 45: A Quiet Exit

You will complete the first objective almost immediately. As you approach the Palace, a cutscene will trigger in which you meet up with Quiet, successfully finishing this task. The real challenge of the mission kicks in right after the cutscene with Quiet. Waves of armored vehicles will start attacking your position, and the best strategy is to stand your ground in front of the palace. Instead of hiding from the tanks, confront them directly using your CGM rockets. Take cover behind the large rocks situated in front of the palace and utilize the CGM Lock-on feature to fire your rockets whenever the opportunity arises. No need to worry about running out of ammo; once you're low, an automatic supply drop will be called in at no cost to you. After you take down the first seven vehicles, you'll get a brief reprieve before the next wave arrives. Keep pressing the attack with your CGM launcher, focusing on eliminating all remaining vehicles while letting Quiet take care of the standard soldiers. Once you destroy the final vehicle, a cutscene will trigger. Once the mechanized unit is defeated, you'll need to carry Quiet through a sandstorm to the landing zone (LZ). The challenge here is the near-zero visibility! Stick close to the mountain walls and proceed cautiously toward the LZ to the south. Be aware of two soldiers you might encounter when you're about 150 meters from the LZ, as they'll require careful navigation to avoid detection and successfully complete the mission.

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 44: [Total Stealth] Pitch Dark

To navigate through the town efficiently, stick to the right side (eastern side) during the night. This route is less patrolled, allowing you to move more stealthily and avoid drawing attention from the guards. Keep an eye out for any soldiers and utilize cover effectively as you make your way through. Once you exit the village, head straight to the oilfield and find a cliff that provides a vantage point overlooking the southern section. This elevated position is ideal for scanning the area and taking out any enemies you can spot with your sniper rifle. At this point, you have a few options: you can eliminate all enemies, target only a select few and sneak past the rest, or, if you're feeling daring, attempt to slip by all of them unnoticed. We recommend taking out all the enemies, as this approach is the safest and provides the greatest security for your ongoing objectives. If you're concerned about drawing attention with gunfire or if you believe patrols might discover the bodies, consider using stealth to perform close-quarters takedowns instead, ensuring to hide any bodies afterward. Once you’ve cleared the oilfield, proceed to shut down the pump to complete your mission. Once you’ve followed the previous advice and flipped the switch, proceed to blow up the tank. Attach C4 to it and quickly retreat to a safe distance before detonating the explosives; the farther away you are, the better. This is important because the explosion will attract additional soldiers to the area. As you make your escape from the base, stick close to the walls and stay prone to maximize your stealth, allowing you to avoid detection as the soldiers rush past you.

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 43: Shining Lights, Even in Death

To trigger this mission, Snake must complete three missions or Side Ops after the hijacking of Sahelanthropus from Mother Base. Once the third mission is completed, Miller will contact Snake to inform him about a new outbreak. This leads to a one-time-only cutscene where Snake decides to take matters into his own hands and handle the situation himself. The mission starts with Snake entering the ruined facility, where numerous events unfold around him. Despite the chaos, Snake's primary objective is to navigate through the ruins and reach the top of the facility. To progress through the mission, simply follow the path and ascend the stairway until you reach the top floor, where you will find the scientist. After the cutscene concludes, Snake will be rewarded with a pair of TDG goggles. After acquiring the TDG goggles, Snake must retrace his steps through the facility to eliminate all the infected soldiers. Equip the goggles to easily spot the infected personnel, as they will be highlighted. Proceed to execute each infected staff member, ensuring that none are left alive to prevent further outbreaks. Be cautious as you navigate back, as the area may still contain non-infected guards or other threats. Upon reaching the first floor, look for a special lower level that can be accessed through an unlockable door. Inside, you'll encounter a group of infected soldiers who must be executed to contain the outbreak. After dealing with them, make sure to check the back of the room, where you'll find a non-infected soldier. This soldier may provide valuable information or context regarding the situation, so be prepared for a dialogue or additional mission objectives following this discovery. After securing the non-infected soldier, carry him back to the exit of the facility to trigger a cutscene. This moment serves as a poignant culmination of the mission’s moral complexities. Once the cutscene concludes, you’ll need to put the soldier down in a designated area. After placing him down, execute him to complete the mission. This final act underscores the difficult choices Snake must make in the face of the outbreak, concluding the mission with a heavy emotional weight.

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 42: [Extreme] Metallic Archaea

When facing the Skulls, sustained fire is key, as they require continuous damage rather than bursts from a launcher. Additionally, the D-Walker is an excellent asset for this mission. Equip it with a Gatling Gun, and you’ll be able to unleash a barrage of firepower on the Skulls, significantly improving your chances of success. Gear up and prepare for an intense battle! There are several effective strategies for taking out the Skulls in this mission. As soon as the mission begins, it’s crucial to find cover quickly to avoid getting shredded in the open. So, where should you seek cover? The fence surrounding the base has several holes, providing a strategic advantage. Since the map ends just outside this area, it becomes quite challenging for the Skulls to teleport behind you. Additionally, the zombies typically won't approach, making the fence an excellent barrier against most of the Skulls' attacks. To reach this cover, look to your right immediately after spawning and proceed past the red-and-white tower toward the perimeter. Once you're in position, you’ll be better equipped to engage the Skulls and defend yourself effectively. If you intend to confront the Skulls head-on, either directly or with the assistance of D-Walker, it’s time to get your weapons ready and engage in combat. The key to success in this battle is to remain mobile. Make sure to duck in and out of cover while staying aware of the Skulls’ movements. Pay close attention to whether they are charging toward you for a lunge attack or preparing to throw rocks. Maintaining your mobility will help you evade their attacks while allowing you to retaliate effectively. Keep your eyes on the battlefield and adapt your position as needed to gain the upper hand against these formidable foes. There are two crucial openings you should watch for when fighting the Skulls, allowing you to unleash a barrage of damage. The first opportunity arises when they release a cloud around themselves. During this moment, you can inflict significant damage, but be careful not to get too close, as their attacks can be devastating. The second opening occurs after a lunge attack. If you successfully counter it by stabbing them with their own sword, they will be momentarily stunned and stand still for up to five seconds. This gives you a prime opportunity to unleash a flurry of bullets, maximizing your damage output while they are vulnerable. Keep an eye out for these moments to turn the tide of the battle in your favor. Engaging the Skulls directly can be challenging, but it's also highly rewarding when executed correctly. Timing your counterattacks effectively and using rapid-fire weapons can help you break down their armor before calling in air support for bombardment. It's essential to focus on only one or two Skulls at a time to manage the chaos. If possible, try to separate them from each other. Typically, two Skulls will stay in the back, throwing rocks, while the other two engage you in close combat. By putting enough distance between them, you can isolate the enemies and reduce the number of Skulls you have to contend with at once, making the fight significantly more manageable. This strategy allows you to maintain control of the battle and increase your chances of success. Taking down even a single Skull can significantly ease the challenge of the fight, and once you've eliminated a second one, the overall difficulty will diminish considerably. It’s crucial to remember to duck and take cover for a few seconds whenever you sustain damage, as this will help you regain your composure and avoid being overwhelmed. Always stay alert for any Skulls preparing to lunge at you, as successfully countering their attacks can create openings for your own offensive moves. Once you've defeated all the Skulls, your objective becomes straightforward: pick up the fallen enemy and carry him to the helicopter to complete the mission. Staying focused and maintaining your strategy throughout the battle will lead you to victory.

  • Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker – PS4 Review

In the vast realm of MMORPGs, few titles have managed to stand the test of time and evolve as gracefully as Final Fantasy XIV. Now, as we bid farewell with Endwalker, it's clear that Final Fantasy XIV continues to build upon its solid foundation, delivering a rich and engaging experience to its dedicated player base. Story and Worldbuilding Endwalker wastes no time immersing players into its narrative, whisking them away to the bureaucratic city-state of Old Sharlayan. The city's meticulous design and bustling atmosphere showcase the game's unparalleled world-building. However, the story's slow progression, coupled with frequent escort quests, occasionally hampers the pacing, making the narrative feel weighed down. The exploration of Thavnair, though visually vibrant, feels somewhat underwhelming due to events in the story. In contrast, a brief visit to Garlemald fails to fully explore its potential, resulting in missed opportunities for meaningful storytelling. The tale eventually escalates to cosmic proportions, introducing a new antagonist late into the expansion, leaving some fans feeling underwhelmed. Gameplay and Job Classes Despite narrative hiccups, Endwalker truly shines in its gameplay. Job classes have received thoughtful adjustments, with standout additions being the Reaper and Sage. The Reaper offers an engaging melee DPS experience, requiring players to master intricate combos and balance multiple gauges, reminiscent of the high-octane action of Stormblood's Samurai. The Sage, a healing Job, brings a refreshing change of pace, rewarding players for taking and distributing damage, providing a more involved healing experience. Endgame content, including dungeons and Extreme Trials, is satisfyingly challenging yet accessible, thanks to clear telegraphing of attacks and party-wide mechanics. The combat design, a hallmark of Final Fantasy XIV, continues to evolve sensibly, enhancing the overall player experience. Quality-of-Life Improvements Endwalker introduces a slew of quality-of-life changes, ranging from improved teleportation markers to streamlined item searches in the marketplace. These seemingly minor tweaks significantly enhance the game's usability and player convenience, making the experience smoother and more enjoyable. The Verdict In summary, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker marks the end of an era, weaving together threads from previous expansions while introducing new elements. While the story may not hit all the right notes, the expansion's combat adjustments and quality-of-life enhancements demonstrate the developers' commitment to refining their masterpiece. As we bid farewell to Hydaelyn and Zodiark, Endwalker stands as a testament to the game's enduring legacy, offering a satisfying conclusion to long-time players and a compelling entry point for newcomers. • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 41: Proxy War Without End

This mission closely resembles the earlier Mission 8, "Occupation Forces." You’ll encounter several vehicles, including one helicopter, that you need to handle. For this reason, it’s essential to bring along some form of launcher, as well as other items to either destroy the vehicles or Fulton them out. As long as you have a well-upgraded launcher, this mission shouldn’t be too difficult. Keep in mind that depending on your launcher’s upgrade status, it may take 2-3 shots to bring down the helicopter. The helicopter won’t spawn immediately, so be patient and wait for it to appear in the skies before taking your shot. Ideally, you should leave the helicopter for last, as shooting it down will create quite a commotion. This will alert all the nearby soldiers and vehicles, causing them to begin searching for you. By taking care of the other threats first, you can minimize the chaos and make it easier to deal with the helicopter when you're ready. This strategic approach will help you maintain control of the situation throughout the mission. Shortly after the mission begins, the tanks will spawn and start driving to various locations, where they will remain stationary for a period. This gives you a good opportunity to deal with them effectively. As always, we recommend using the Fulton to extract the tanks rather than destroying them. This method is quieter and allows you to add a shiny new tank to your collection. Just be sure to approach from behind and ensure that no soldiers spot you while you’re performing the extraction. This stealthy approach will help you maintain the element of surprise and complete your objectives with minimal hassle. Similar to the tanks, it’s advisable to Fulton the vehicles out rather than destroy them. They will drive around for a while before eventually stopping, giving you the chance to extract them. If needed, you can also use Decoys or other obstructions placed on the road to force them to halt. However, if you find yourself needing to blow them up, keep in mind that it will typically take 2-3 shots, depending on your launcher and its upgrades. Be mindful of your ammunition, as it can deplete quickly during this mission. Opting for stealthy extractions will help conserve your resources and keep the situation under control.

The seamless flow of encounters, intuitive tech system, and the ability to combine spells and techniques for powerful attacks earn it a perfect score in gameplay. Chrono Trigger's visuals, utilizing 2D sprite animation and an overhead view, may not be groundbreaking by today's standards, but they are a testament to timeless design. The archetypal settings distinguish different eras in time, enhancing the immersive quality. The character models, animations, and iconic designs keep your eyes glued to the screen. With minimal sound effects, Chrono Trigger relies on its stellar music to captivate players. Composed by Mr. Mitsuda, the score is considered among the finest in gaming. • Final Fantasy VI – iOS Review

In a world scarred by the War of the Magi, the Espers, wielders of the mystical force called Magicite, chose exile to prevent humans from exploiting their powers. A millennium later, the Gestahlian Empire rediscovers Magicite, intertwining it with technology to forge Magitek warmachines, aiming to conquer the world. Terra, an unwilling soldier, breaks free from the empire's control during an attack on Narshe, losing her memories but gaining her freedom. In a quest for redemption, she joins the Returners to thwart the empire and unveil her forgotten past. Final Fantasy VI stands as a pinnacle in the series, emphasizing narrative and character depth. While FFIV laid the foundation for story-driven games, FFV took a more gameplay-centric approach. VI, along with VII, contends for the coveted title of "Best Final Fantasy," and the Pixel Remaster for VI, the latest in Square Enix's series, might just claim that throne. If you're new to Pixel Remasters, a brief rundown is in order. Previous versions of numbered Final Fantasy games on modern devices suffered from poor quality, replacing original pixel art with lackluster designs. Square Enix responded to fan concerns by recreating the classic pixel style. Despite some changes, like widescreen support, a music player with orchestrated soundtracks, and a redone translation, the essence remains unchanged. FFVI, the last in this series, builds upon its predecessors and stands out as an exceptional entry. Evolving from FFV, FFVI abandons the job system, instead spreading its concept across a diverse cast. Each character boasts unique abilities; for instance, Locke, the thief, can steal, while Sabin, the martial artist, executes powerful Blitz techniques. Magic, initially wielded by Terra and Celes, becomes customizable for any character through Espers. The party structure dynamically shifts, ensuring engagement with various characters and their abilities throughout the adventure. FFVI maintains a linear narrative in its early stages, gradually opening up for player-driven exploration in the second half. While some may find the initial linearity slow, it provides a solid foundation for understanding the cast's abilities and character dynamics. The game's characters stand out as some of the franchise's most likable and relatable. The love story between Locke and Celes feels genuine, and Celes's struggle with suicide presents a remarkably relatable portrayal in video games. Terra, with her unique design, remains a standout protagonist, earning her place among the series' best. The Opera Scene, a memorable segment, receives a fresh shine in this remaster. While the majority of the game maintains its bright, 2D pixel art, the Opera Scene adopts a more modern HD-2D style, akin to Octopath Traveler. Visual improvements in certain segments enhance the overall experience, providing a delightful blend of the classic and contemporary. In line with the Pixel Remaster series, FFVI impresses with its visuals and music. However, the font choice remains a glaring issue, requiring players to delve into the game's files for a fix. Despite this flaw, the game's fantastic presentation and compelling storytelling make it a standout entry in the Pixel Remaster collection. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster on iOS preserves the magic of the classic while introducing visual enhancements and quality of life improvements. A compelling narrative, diverse characters, and a revamped Opera Scene make it a worthy addition to the Pixel Remaster series, despite a persistently irksome font choice. Final Score:

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Walkthrough – Mission 40: [Extreme] Cloaked in Silence

Eliminating Quiet is your primary objective, and it can be quite challenging due to her one-hit kill capability. However, there’s an effective strategy you can use to defeat her. When you find cover, peek out and then quickly duck back down. This movement usually prompts her to take a shot. Her rifle is very loud, so you’ll easily know when she fires. After she shoots, quickly pop back up, aim at her, and fire back. It’s crucial to act fast during her reload period to deal damage. If you take too long to position your reticle, she’ll fire again, and if you’re still exposed, it could be game over for you! Staying quick and decisive is key to taking her down successfully. Once you hit Quiet, she will jump down and relocate. The key to winning this fight is to change your position just like she does. After she moves, Quiet will aim her rifle at Snake's last known position, giving you the opportunity to find cover elsewhere. This allows Snake to aim at her without her being aware that you've shifted locations. If executed correctly, you can line up your shot and fire at her without her seeing where you are now situated. This tactic can give you the upper hand in the fight and increase your chances of defeating her effectively. By employing this strategy repeatedly, Snake can land several effective headshots on Quiet. Since she relocates and aims at your previous position, she won’t detect you in your new spot. Make sure to move to your new location before she reaches hers after each shot. If you consistently execute this tactic every time you shoot her, the fight becomes significantly easier. The key is to maintain your timing and positioning, ensuring you’re already hidden before she settles into her new vantage point. This will maximize your chances of taking her down successfully. You will complete this objective by approaching Quiet and aiming your gun at her. At this point, you have two choices: you can fire to eliminate her, or you can choose to refrain from shooting, which will save her life and allow you to bring her back to Mother Base. The decision you make here will impact the story and your relationship with Quiet, so consider your options carefully before proceeding.
