Microsoft is currently undergoing significant changes, including large-scale layoffs and studio sell-offs. Part of a corporate "reset." Recent developments confirm that studios Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are being sold, while Double Fine and Compulsion are becoming independent entities. However, the future of Arkane Lyon, the studio behind the long-anticipated Blade game, remains unclear as it enters a phase of "required consultation" with its local Works Council in France.

This consultation process is mandated by local labor laws and will involve a review of potential strategic options for the studio. The question lingering in the air is whether Arkane Lyon will follow in the footsteps of Ninja Theory and Undead Labs by being sold, opt for independence akin to Double Fine and Compulsion, or face shutdown like its sister studio, Arkane Austin. As for the Blade game, Microsoft has stated that no publicly announced first-party titles are being canceled during this reset, but the fate of the project is uncertain if Arkane Lyon is sold.
Disney, which holds the rights to Marvel, will likely play a role in any negotiations regarding the Blade game. Arkane co-founder Raphael Colantonio, who has since left the company, humorously inquired about the potential cost of acquiring Arkane in response to news about the studio's uncertain future.
Reports suggest that Marvel's Blade has faced budget issues and internal delays, initially aiming for a 2026 release, which has now shifted to late 2027. This information surfaced following Blade's absence from the Xbox Games show in June. The game was first announced during The Game Awards in December 2023, but the reveal showed only a CG trailer that many interpreted as a way to generate excitement and assist in recruiting new staff for Arkane Lyon.
Game director Dinga Bakaba previously indicated that Blade is a third-person action-adventure title set in Paris, yet no gameplay footage has been unveiled thus far. Arkane Lyon, known for its successful titles like Dishonored and Dishonored 2, has a strong reputation for immersive world-building and intricate level design. Fans are eager to see how these skills will translate into the established Marvel universe.
Meanwhile, the Blade film, starring Mahershala Ali, has faced its own set of challenges over the years, experiencing numerous delays throughout its development. As the situation unfolds, many in the gaming and entertainment communities will be watching closely to see how Arkane Lyon and Microsoft.
