Netflix to Adapt 'Persona' Video Game Franchise into Live-Action Series

Netflix is embarking on the development of a live-action series inspired by the acclaimed "Persona" video game franchise, as reported by Variety. Christopher Monfette will take the helm as the writer and executive producer. He will be joined by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine, who will also serve as executive producers, alongside Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg, stevenson from Story Kitchen. Additionally, Toru Nakahara from SEGA will lend his expertise as an executive producer. Emily Feher is overseeing the project for 21 Laps, a company that currently holds an TV deal with Netflix. While Netflix has opted not to provide further comments, the announcement has generated excitement among fans of the franchise.

The Persona series has become a beloved staple in the RPG genre, known for its engaging narratives that often revolve around Japanese high school students balancing everyday life with supernatural challenges. Developed by P-Studios and a division of Atlus, the franchise has seen six main entries thus far, with the seventh installment, "Persona 6," confirmed to be in development as of June 2026. The series has also spawned 15 related spinoffs, starting with "Revelations: Persona," which debuted in 1996 as a spin-off of the "Shin Megami Tensei" series. The latest release was "Persona 5: The Phantom X" in 2025, and fans can look forward to "Persona 4 Revival," set for release in February 2027.

This live-action series will not mark Netflix’s first foray into video game adaptations. The streaming giant has previously produced popular content such as the live-action The Witcher series and animated shows like Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the upcoming Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

Christopher Monfette, known for his work on shows like "12 Monkeys" for Syfy, "Star Trek: Picard" on Paramount+. "9-1-1" for Fox and ABC, is also involved in the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series "VisionQuest" as a writer and co-executive producer. 21 Laps is recognized for producing the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things," which played a significant role in establishing the success of Netflix originals. The company has also been behind other popular series like "The Perfect Couple" and "Last Man Standing," in addition to producing successful films including the recent "Backrooms" and "Deadpool & Wolverine."

Story Kitchen, founded in 2022 by "Sonic the Hedgehog" producer Dmitri M. Johnson and former agency partner Michael Lawrence Goldberg, specializes in adapting video games and other unconventional intellectual properties into television and film. Their current projects include a live-action "Tomb Raider" series and a live-action adaptation of "Life Is Strange," both in development for Amazon Prime Video.

Monfette is represented by Industry Entertainment, while 21 Laps and Story Kitchen are represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham, and WME and Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn, respectively.
