Final Fantasy I Pixel Remaster Walkthrough – Part 7 – Dungeons & Dragons

In your journey through the game, the addition of the Airship allows players to traverse the expansive world with greater freedom. Before you tackle the task of restoring the next crystal, it’s crucial to secure a significant class upgrade for your party, which will enhance their power. This chapter is packed with exploration, featuring 23 treasure chests and 15 new entries in the bestiary.

To reach the Citadel of Trials, players will find 10 chests spread over three floors. Upon entering, seek out the elder located in the center of the Citadel. He will recognize the Crown and grant you the opportunity to undergo the trials. After your conversation, head to the top left corner of the area and take a seat on the throne, which will teleport you to the second floor.

Citadel of Trials

The second floor is a maze of portals. Follow this precise route for navigation:

  • Room 1: Only one portal available.

  • Room 2: Only one portal available.

  • Room 3: Choose the bottom portal.

  • Room 4: Only one portal available.

  • Room 5: Select the bottom portal.

  • Room 6: Only one portal available.

  • Room 7: Opt for the rightmost portal.

  • Room 8: Go through any right door and pick up a Potion.

After exiting Room 8, head south and use the southernmost teleporter, then ascend the stairs to reach the third floor.

On the third floor, travel north to encounter a Minotaur Zombie. Defeating this foe rewards you with a Healing Staff located in a chest right in front of you. Continue left to find three additional chests. Once you’ve collected those, proceed south where you’ll discover four more chests (one of which is guarded by enemies). Move right to uncover the final chest containing the Rat’s Tail.

Defeating Dragon Zombies

As you look to exit the Citadel, you will face two Dragon Zombies. They attack each turn and have specific weaknesses and resistances:

  • Weak to: Fire and Dia

  • Resists: Ice, Poison, Death

  • Immune to: Silence, Sleep, Paralysis, Darkness, Poison, Stone, Stun

To effectively manage this battle, concentrate your attacks on one Dragon Zombie to minimize damage taken. Utilize Fira from your Black Mage and Diara or Diaga from your White Mage, and equip the Flame Sword on your Warrior for added fire damage. After the battle, return to the throne to teleport back to the first floor and exit the Citadel.

Dragon Caves Treasure Hunt

Once you’re back at your Airship, fly northwest to a cluster of five small islands known as the Dragon Caves, which house 13 treasure chests. These caves are notable for having no random encounters. Start your exploration on the rightmost island where the first room contains three chests filled with Gil. The second room has four additional chests.

The marshlands island has three chests containing an Elixir, Cottage, and 1,000 Gil. The leftmost island includes a Tent upstairs, and a Dry Ether alongside a Gold Needle downstairs, completing the treasure hunt with all 13 chests collected.

Meeting Bahamut for Class Upgrades

After gathering your treasures, board your Airship and navigate to the northern island’s eastern entrance. Traverse through the tunnels until you reach Bahamut. Present him with the Rat’s Tail, and he will grant your entire party a class upgrade.

These class changes elevate each character to an advanced form, unlocking new spells and equipment options:

  • Warrior → Knight: Gains access to level 3 White Magic and can equip the best gear.

  • Thief → Ninja: Unlocks level 4 Black Magic and a wider array of weapons and armor.

  • Monk → Master: New equipment options, with a focus on bare-handed combat.

  • Red Mage → Red Wizard: Access to level 7 spells in both magic schools.

  • White Mage → White Wizard: Learns powerful spells like Full-Life and Holy.

  • Black Mage → Black Wizard: Gains access to level 7 and 8 Black Magic including Flare.

After upgrading your classes, it’s advisable to visit each town to refresh your spell loadouts. Your Knight should learn Cure and Protect from Cornelia, while your Ninja should acquire Fire and Thunder from Elfheim. Additionally, pick up Exit from Crescent Lake to facilitate your dungeon escapes. With your newly empowered party, set your sights on Gaia in the northeast continent.
