Midgar Studio Faces Liquidation Following Nacon's Insolvency

In a significant turn of events for the gaming industry, a French court has mandated the liquidation of Midgar Studio, the developer behind titles such as Edge of Memories. This decision follows Nacon's recent insolvency filing, which impacted the Montpellier-based studio.

Nacon's Chief Technology Officer, Jérémy Zeler-Maury, shared insights on LinkedIn, expressing the company’s efforts to secure a buyer for Midgar Studio.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were unable to finalize a deal before resources ran out. Zeler-Maury stated, "Over the past few weeks, we worked until the very end to find a solution that could preserve both the company and the team. Despite every avenue explored and everyone who tried to help us, no solution could be completed within the timeframe of the process."

Reflecting on the studio's journey, Zeler-Maury noted his founding of Midgar in 2008, inspired by a desire to create games that blend French and Japanese influences. He reminisced about the studio's evolution over eighteen years, highlighting their work on titles such as Hover and Edge of Eternity, along with various projects and prototypes.

Zeler-Maury emphasized the importance of the people behind Midgar, stating, "Midgar is the work we accomplished on Hover, Edge of Eternity and Edge of Memories, prototypes, ideas and worlds that passed through the studio. But above all, Midgar is the people who brought our games to life, and everyone who contributed to this journey. To everyone who worked at Midgar, whether today or at any point over these eighteen years: thank you."

This situation is part of a broader trend within Nacon, as other subsidiaries like Spiders, Kylotonn, and Cyanide also filed for insolvency earlier this year. At that time, Nacon aimed to explore all potential solutions to keep operations running. The parent company, Bigben Group, initiated this wave of insolvencies after it failed to partially repay a bond loan, which ultimately led to the challenges faced by these studios.

As the gaming community reflects on the legacy of Midgar Studio, the hope remains that the talented team and their creative endeavors can find a new path forward.
