Take-Two Targets Legal Action Over Grand Theft Auto VI Leaked Footage

Updated: 12 hours ago

In an escalating legal battle, Take-Two Interactive is pursuing the identity of a notorious leaker known as Cyberleek, who has generated significant attention, and profit. by sharing footage from a development build of Grand Theft Auto VI. This situation has not only embarrassed the publisher but also prompted them to take serious legal action against the individual responsible.

To facilitate their investigation, Take-Two has sought subpoenas from both Microsoft and Discord. This move has raised concerns among players regarding the potential exposure of their personal information. According to a document obtained by The Verge, Take-Two's request aims to gather "all identifying information associated with all user accounts that are/were members communicating with the Discord server(s) listed below during the time period from June 1, 2026 to present."

The data requested includes account IDs, registration emails, last-login IP addresses, phone numbers and linked connections (such as Google or Xbox). they are seeking any content tied to Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar, or the leaker from users' OneDrive accounts. This extensive data collection could pose privacy risks for thousands of users if the subpoenas are granted.

Currently, the Discord server known as Odyssey has approximately 5,600 members, while another server associated with content creator DarkViperAU has over 100,000 members. Understandably, many of these individuals may feel uneasy about Take-Two potentially accessing their personal information, regardless of the circumstances.

In response to the growing concerns, Discord's marketing director Ryan K. Rigney took to social media platform X to provide reassurance. He stated that Discord has not yet received a subpoena from Take-Two. Rigney further emphasized that once they do, the company will review its validity and scope before taking any action.

As of August 21, while the subpoena has been approved, it has not yet been officially served. This ongoing situation is a stark reminder of the realities of online privacy in the digital age, highlighting that anonymity is often illusory, particularly when major corporations pursue legal avenues.

With the stakes high for both the leaker and the players involved, the gaming community will be closely monitoring how this situation unfolds and how it might impact the broader dialogue around privacy and data protection in online gaming environments.
